Nigeria Sues for Illegal Exportation



Nigeria, Tuesday sues numbers of leading oil companies for the illegal exportation of $12.7bn crude oil into the United States (US).

According to the court register, the federal high court in Lagos by next week would begin hearing in the cases filed against the Nigerian subsidiary of the U.S; Multinational Chevron, British-Dutch Shell, Italian Eni’s Agip, France’s Total and Brazilian Petrobas.

Lady Isabel Ordernaz, A spokeswoman at the company’s Houston headquarters, said that Chevron would not comment, because the issue “is the subject of the ongoing litigation”, as other companies did not respond immediately to the requests for the comment.

It has been placed into records that Nigeria was Africa’s largest oil producer until the militant attacks cut production and Angola overtook in March.

Following report, it has been discovered that the cases could flirt annoyance against oil companies who have already been accused of polluting farmlands, fishing grounds and other agricultural inhabitations.

Some officials who deduced fro audits of declared exports and what was unloaded in the U.S, said Nigeria’s government alleges that the companies declared not more than 57million barrels of crude oil for shipping.

One of the officials claimed anonymity, said that “some shiploads registered less after they leave Nigeria, while some registered on reaching the U.S, as some others were undeclared in Nigeria” he said.

According to OPEC, “this year, Nigeria’s export to the U.S has increased by six folds, whereas the U.S was the highest importer of Nigerian oil until it began to exploit its own shale oil reserves.

Michael Kanko also concurred to the fact that his U.S based import Genius database was used by Attoneys, so as to confirm declarations made by Shippers and importers.

The representative in the case against Chevron, which begins on the 30th of September 2016, is represented by Law Professor Fabian Ajogwu.
